GCSE Music Students recently attended events hosted by the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast.
On Monday, January 21st they watched the orchestra grow and develop from single soloists to a large and powerful force in a Time Travel event which guided pupils through 400 years of music. The chance to follow this process visually and audibly will be invaluable as the students approach their Set Works for GCSE and in true time-travelling fashion, the concert concluded with a performance of the theme tune from Doctor Who which is part of the current CCEA Specification – there was no sign of the time lord himself but with the wonders of modern technology and electronics, the TARDIS was heard to take off and land again….
On a more serious note (no pun intended), pupils attended an evening concert on Friday 8th February where they availed of discounted tickets using the Ulster Orchestra’s Student Scheme. The programme for the evening included Beethoven’s Symphony No 7 (which is studied for GCSE), Brahms’ Violin Concerto and the ethereal sounding “Musica Celestis” by the contemporary American composer Aaron Jay Kernis. Pupils were able to use their study scores to follow the music during the Beethoven and the chance to see and hear the orchestra perform live is an experience they will value over the period of their GCSE course and in times to come.
