The All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) challenges secondary school students to test their minds against the world’s toughest problems in logic, language and linguistics. Students must develop their own strategies for solving complex problems in unfamiliar languages (including this year Danish, Greek and Japanese) – making AILO a fabulous way to hone problem-solving and lateral thinking skills!
Round 1 of the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) took place on Monday 2nd February 2015 in school. The first round was an individual paper that took 2 hours in exam conditions. This year there was a lot of interest in the competition and 26 of our pupils from junior and senior school participated in the first round. The AILO this year had, in total, 1,267 students participating, a massive (68%) increase on last year, with only the top 100 students invited to attend a second round. Cookstown High School was very proud to have three qualifying pupils for Round 2, this was a first for us. Jake Ferguson (Yr12), Vincent Wong (Yr11) and Alice Li (Yr 10) all made the qualifying mark and were invited to Dublin City University on Tuesday 24th March. Each of our students performed admirably in the individual 2 hour paper and it was very exciting to learn that of the top 100 problem solvers in Ireland Vincent was placed 2nd in the Junior Competition, earning him a silver medal, narrowly missing out on a place in the team travelling to Bulgaria in the summer.
This has been an extremely challenging and exciting opportunity for the pupils and we look forward to competing in this event again next year, building on the very positive experiences from 2015.
