Badminton Ulster Champions

13th Mar 2014

On Friday 7th March the Senior and Junior Girls Badminton teams from Cookstown High School travelled to the National Badminton Centre in Lisburn to play in their respective League Finals.

The Senior Team of Kerri Scott, Alex Scott, Dana Suitor and Lisa Stockdale beat Coleraine High School 5-1 to become Ulster Division 2 League Champions.

It was then the turn of the Junior Team consisting of Lauren Reilly, Emma McAllen, Ruth McAllen, Hannah Lennox and Faye Stockdale to play against Wallace High School in their final. The girls knew the match we'd be very tight having drawn with the Wallace girls two weeks prior to the final and tight it was. It went down to the very last game, drawing 3-3, the Cookstown girls won the match on by 2 sets and 6 points.

Mrs Hall, their coach says, "I am immensely proud of the character and team spirit shown by all the girls to each other at the finals. The support, encouragement and unity that they showed one another was great to watch. The girls fought hard to get into the final and now they are Ulster League Champions! It's fantastic! The Junior Girls had a very tough match against Wallace HS where every point played mattered. Three of their 6 games went to 3 sets, it's a credit to the girls to have won as they never gave up."

Now both teams travel to Gormanstown, Dublin on Wednesday 19th March to represent Ulster Schools in the Division Two League Finals. They will play representatives from Leinster, Munster and Connaught to see who becomes Irish League Champions.

We wish the girls every success
