Are you Anxious or Worried?

15th Apr 2020

Worry is something that impacts many of us and in the midst of the current pandemic, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by fear and anxiety.  Perhaps it is financial worries; or fear for our own health or that of our loved ones.  Worry has been compared to a rocking chair - it keeps us busy but it doesn't get us anywhere.  Often fear and worry keep the motor running even after we are parked, resulting in us being worn out even when sitting still.

In the book of Isaiah the prophet shared God's advice with the people of Israel, who were facing attack from an enemy and who were being forced from their homeland  This is what God said to them - "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God.  I will strengthen; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41 v 10)

This is a beautiful reminder of God's constantly abiding presence with his people. In this verse there are:

Two 'Do Nots'
Do not fear.
Do not be dismayed.

Two 'I Ams'
I am with you.
I am your God.

Three 'I Wills'
I will strengthen you.
I will help you.
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

If we can apply this advice, it can also help each of us to overcome fear and anxiety.

Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand.
