Hockey - Girls
Girls Hockey is extremely popular in Cookstown High School to such an extent that over 80 girls train, once or twice a week from September to March.
Each Saturday 2 senior teams, 1st XI and 2nd XI and 2 junior teams U14 & U13 compete in friendly matches against schools from all over the province. In addition cup matches are arranged mid week for a further 2 teams (3rd XI & U15) at senior level. From the start of their High School experience year 8 pupils are given the opportunity to hone their skills, practising once or twice a week and getting full use of the schools astro turf surface.
Enthusiasm and dedication is portrayed in the schools’ involvement in cup competitions and here too the Cookstown High School girls are well represented in the Senior Schools Cup, McDowell Cup for 2ndXI’s, Gibson Cup for 3rdXI’s and Junior Cup for U14XI’s.
The 2012 season has been exceptional with the 1st Xi reaching the semi final of the Ulster Schools Shield, and the final of the West of Ulster League whilst the U14’s reached the semi final of the Junior Schools Cup and shared the West of Ulster League title.
On a smaller scale there is an opportunity for Year 8’s U13’s and U15’s to play in West of Ulster & Mid Ulster Cup and League matches.
The finale of the season is our annual tour where the Senior Hockey and Netball teams get to play against other schools from different backgrounds and cultures. This is an opportunity for the girls to appreciate their sports and to build and learn from other schools.
