A level
Pupils follow the CCEA specification. It comprised of two levels: AS and A2.
The AS can be taken as a ‘stand-alone’ qualification without continuing to A2. To obtain the Advanced GCE qualification, students must complete both the AS and A2 levels.
The specification has a modular structure and students are required to study three modules at each level. The modules are all compulsory. It is taught in 6 periods by a selection of teachers
There is a field trip at the end of the second term to Derrygonnelly outside Enniskillen. The Biology Field is an integral part of the AS Biology Course at Cookstown High School. Field Work is essential for the development of a range of skills and techniques tested in all Modules.
During the trip pupils carry out a wide variety of activities including:
• sampling procedures;
• sampling devices to include quadrats, pitfall traps, sweep nets and pooters;
• estimation of species abundance, density and percentage cover;
• measurement of the biotic and abiotic factors which may be influencing the distribution of organisms.
