A-Level Art Exhibition    [Posted: 27/06/05]


Students studying A-Level art at both AS and A2 Level took had the opportunity to shine at the recent Art Exhibition held in the school.

Large numbers of people turned out to view the excellent and varied work on display.

Year 10 pupils recently took part in a three day enrichment programme in Education for Employability. The programme included Team building activities, Enterprise activities, Skill development workshops and Workplace visits. The School would like to thank Ulster Bank, Lafarge Cement, Meteor Electrical and East Tyrone College for their support with this initiative.

 

A-Level German Students Win First Prize in Competition   [Posted: 22/05/05]
Three A-Level students E. Ferguson, R. Fleming and J. Mc Keown have won first prize in a competition based on the benefits of having a German language assistant. This year’s assistant, Yvonne Horn, has played a vital role by encouraging the pupils to develop their conversation skills and to learn more about the German culture.
The pupils, Yvonne, Mrs Allen (German teacher) and Ms Fleming ( HOD Modern Languages )have been invited to Stormont to receive a presentation on Thursday evening on May 19th. The event has been organised by the British Council.

 

Year 8 Students Enjoy Maths Roadshow   [Posted: 22/05/05]

Year 8 students enjoyed a maths roadshow run by The University of Ulster. The students were as to solve puzzles and conundrums using their maths skills. The students gained points for each puzzle they solved and where able to earn a certificate at the end of the session. Unfortunately the roadshow was cut short by the evacuation of the school due to the gas fire. However it is hoped to run the roadshow again at a later date.

 

Open Night a great success       [Posted: 25/1/05]
January saw the doors of Cookstown High School thrown wide open to welcome the pupils and parents from the local primary schools. Primary 7 pupils were able to see that Cookstown High has facilities second to none and to learn a little bit more about how things are done in the “big school”.

 

Young Cook of the Year competition    [Posted: 25/1/05]
Congratulations to Louise in Year 10 who has been selected to go forward to the Northern Ireland final of the Diary Council’s Young Cook of the Year competition. The competition involved planning a two course meal for four people. During the final will be held in Lisburn and Louise will have 1 hour to prepare the main course for the judges.

Congratulations to Andrew in Year 10 who recently won a poster competition run jointly by TIPSA and CDDAF. The competition was to design a poster to raise young people’s awareness of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Andrews winning design has been printed and will be displayed in schools in the Cookstown area.

31 pupils from Cookstown High School where recently presented with their Food Hygiene Options Certificates by Sandra Witherspoon from Loughery College. The pupils benefited from training at Loughry College before undertaking the examination which is administered by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

 

Sixth Form Hold Annual Formal at Glenavon      [Posted: 27/12/04]
The hand bags and glad rags where out in force when the Sixth form held their Annual Formal dance in the Glenavon House Hotel. The Gentlemen all scrubbed up very well, but as usual it was the girls that stole the show with their stunning outfits. A great night was had by all.

Who says men are better drivers?    [Posted: 27/12/04]
This is one young lady who would definitely disagree and she has the skills to prove it. Sammy who is in year 10 has just been voted Young Lady Driver of the Year. So far this year she has won 5 races competing against boys 2 or 3 years her senior. She was also 4th in the Ulster Cup and 3rd In the Northern Ireland Championship. Hopefully it will not be too long before we can see Sammy on the track at Siverstone. The word is that Jenson Button is already worried about his place.

 

Remembrance Day Honour for Cookstown Boys Brigade    [Posted: 27/12/04]
A detachment of Cookstown Boys Brigade where invited to take part in the Remembrance Day Service at the cenotaph in Whitehall in London. The Boys took part in the Remembrance Day Service then joined the march past which was watched by the Queen and the rest of the Royal family.

Ashlie, Miles and Megan welcome the television presenter John Daly to Cookstown High School. The Year 8 pupils had nominated Mr Wilson their maths teacher to face the challenge of the gunge tank on the John Dally Show. The trio had to explain to why they had nominated Mr Wilson and then show John Dally and the rest of the television crew through the school to Mr Wilson’s room.

 

Getting the Gunge   [Posted: 24/11/04]
Mr Wilson from the maths department getting gunged by Miles from year 8 as part of the John Daly show which was presented from Cookstown. Miles had early beaten Mr Wilson in a very fair, simple and unfixed quiz to earn the privilege of tipping the green goo over his favourite maths teacher’s head. Although some mention was made about Mr Wilson’s bad hair style and bad taste in ties we are quiet sure that this had nothing what so ever to do with him being nominated for the gunge tank. It was simply that he taught maths and rightly so!

Year 8 pupils hard at work on their rap songs. The pupils where taking part in the “Being Me” drug awareness presentation by the SELB. The presentation provided the pupils with vital information about the harmful effects of drug and alcohol misuse. It also gave them strategies to enable them to deal with pressures they may encounter around the issues of cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.

Christy, Dave and Roisin of the Love for Life team, are pictured together with some of the Year 9 pupils who took part in the recent ‘Who’s Choosing’ workshop. The workshop which forms an integral part of the Year 9 PSHE programme is aimed at raising self-esteem of young people. It also highlights the Influences and Choices that young people come up against in their daily lives.

CHS pupils take centre stage in Languages Showcase     [Posted: 24/11/04]
35 pupils from year 9, year10 and year14 took part in a Languages Showcase event in the Burnavon Theatre. The event organised by Cookstown Council was multi lingual and featured contributions in French, German, Spanish, English, Gaelic, Braille, Sign and Portuguese.
Ms Fleming, Mrs Allen and Karine Caussoy worked very hard to prepare the pupils. Who opened the show with French and German singing, Poetry and a funny Sketch entitled “Au Café”. The pupils performed brilliantly on the night and where a real credit to the school. They were rewarded for all their hard work with book tokens from the council.

 

Cooking up a Storm    [Posted: 24/11/04]
Some of the excellent meals produced by Year 12 students as part of their GCSE Home Economics course. The pupils had to cook 3 or 4 dishes which where high in fibre and which could form the basis of a healthy balanced diet.

 

A-level and AS-level       [Posted: 15/10/04]
Congratulations to all those students who received their recent A-level and AS- level examinations results. Overall a tremendous 85% of sixth form students gained A-C grades. A-level students have gone on to study everything from Sport and Leisure to Law at universities the length and breadth of Britain. We wish you all every success in the future.

Congratulations to all of those Year12 students who did so well in their GCSE examinations this year. Overall 70 % of last years GCSE pupils passed their exams with an A* to C grade. Chief Executive of CCEA attends Prize Day    [Posted: 15/10/04]
Mr Gavin Boyd the Chief Executive of CCEA was the Guest Speaker at this years Prize Day on 22nd September. CCEA is the organisation responsible for setting and marking examinations in Northern Ireland. Mr Boyd congratulated all those pupils who received their prizes for high achievement in school and public examinations and for excellence in sport, music and drama.

 

CASE: Citizenship and Safety Education       [Posted: 15/10/04]
Constable M. Allen of the Community Relations Branch of the PSNI is currently delivering a programme a Citizenship and Safety Education programme to Year 9 Classes, as part of the Year 9 PSHE programme. The programme covers: The role of the Police, vandalism and young people and the Law.

The new Head boy and Head girl Keith and Gillian are looking forward to the challenging job of keeping order in the Sixth form centre this year.
Gillian is currently studying Biology, English Literature and French and she hopes to go on to study Primary Education at Stranmillis College. Gillian thinks that the biggest challenge of being Head Girl will be keeping Keith right!
Keith is currently studying Biology, Physics and P.E. He too hopes to go to Stranmillis college to study Primary Education. Keith thinks being Head Boy will be a piece of cake this year because he has Gillian to keep him right!
They will be ablely supported throughout the year by their deputies

 

Drugs and alcohol education programme for Year 10   [Posted: 15/10/04]
Following a successful and enjoyable programme last year, Cookstown District Drug and Alcohol Forum and TIPSA, Teenagers Involved in Protecting Selves around Alcohol have again joined forces to provide Drug and Alcohol Education to all year 10 pupils in Cookstown High school. The programme will be run over six weeks and deals with the reasons why young people experiment with drugs or alcohol and it explores the risks and consequences involved in taking drugs or alcohol. The programme focuses on the effects alcohol and drugs have on the individual’s physical and mental health, family, friends, relationships and the wider community.
Activities are designed to raise the self esteem of the participants, this will provide them with the confidence to say ‘no’ and not be influence by other when making key decisions about their own lives. It is the aim of the programme to provide factual information and to dispel some of the myths that surround drugs and alcohol. It provides young people with an opportunity to explore key issues in a safe and secure environment.

 

Cookstown High School welcomes the new Head of The English Department    [Posted: 15/10/04]
The English department began in September under the direction of its new Head of Department, Mr Bill Fee. Mr Fee is an experienced teacher, having previously been head of department in a school in Dorset in England for 5 Years and a Drama teacher in Cambridge House, Ballymena. Mr Fee lists his hobbies as football, golf, theatre, movies and books. He is also really looking forward to the school production of an ‘An Italian Straw Hat’. As if there wasn’t enough on his plate Mr Fee is also getting married in December and we would like to wish him and his Fiancé, Moira all the very best for their future together.

 

Former Head boy and Head girl receive prizes     [Posted: 15/10/04]
Christopher and Jemma returned to school on prize day to receive the Betty Young Memorial Award and the Houston Memorial Slaver presented to the former Head boy and Head girl of the school.

 

Pupils in E.U. debate       [Posted: 16/06/04]
On Wednesday, 5th May, five year 14 pupils attended “ E.U.Talk” an open debate organised by the British Council in the long gallery, Parliament Buildings, Stormont. The topic for discussion was the recent E.U. enlargement and the panel comprised, amongst others, the Director of the E.U. Bureau in Belfast and the assistant Director of the N.I. Office in Brussels. More than 80 schools attended the event and questions were invited from the floor.


 

Cambridge University Seminar    [Posted: 16/06/04]
The N.I. Higher Education Access Officer for Cambridge University, Dr Melanie Taylor, recently gave a seminar to Year 10, 11 and 12 pupils. Dr Taylor hopes to raise the awareness amongst pupils of the opportunities afforded by colleges in Cambridge and to encourage students to consider the academically challenging environment of Cambridge University as a realistic objective.





Year 8 World War 2 History Project at the Burnavon    [Posted: 16/06/04]
8DM and 8DS, along with Year 8 pupils from Holy Trinity School attended a World War 2 project, in the Burnavon Arts Centre. Pupils listened to an interesting talk by local historian, Clive Scoular, saw a number of historical artefacts of the period and took part in a table quiz. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the activities and found it all very interesting.


 

Success in Biology Olympiad   [Posted: 16/06/04]
Congratulations to Christopher and Christina who each received certificates to celebrate their achievements in the 9th British Biology Olympiad. Several students in upper sixth had undertaken this very rigorous test of their biological knowledge. Christina was commended for her efforts and Christopher was highly commended.




Making Your Mind Up       [Posted: 14/05/04]
Year 13 Pupils recently attended a seminar given by Claire Mulrone from the University of Ulster about the courses on offer at the university’s five campuses: Jordanstown, Coleraine, Magee, Portrush and Belfast. There have been many other talks given by Admissions tutors representing universities from all over the UK: namely the universities of Newcastle and Northumbria in NE England, the university of St Andrews in E Scotland, the Scottish universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Strathclyde Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh, and Queens University, Belfast.
Year 13 students also visited the UCAS Convention held in the King’s Hall, Belfast, in mid April. This was an opportunity to meet with representatives from over 200 third level institutions from throughout the UK and Ireland.


 

 

Fire Safety Campaign   [Posted: 14/05/04]
As part of the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade’s on going Community Education Programme all Year 8 and Year 9 pupils from Cookstown High School recently attended a seminar and demonstration at Cookstown Fire Station. The event provided the young people with a range of information on the risks of fire, with an emphasis on reducing accidents and deaths in the home. The staff and pupils of Cookstown High School would like to thank all the staff at Cookstown Fire Station who took part in this very important and worthwhile event.


 

Scout’s Highest Honour For CHS pupil    [Posted: 14/05/04]
One of our sixth form pupils was accorded one of the highest honours in scouting this year, when he was selected as a member of the Colour Party at the St George’s Day parade in Windsor Castle in front of Duke of Kent, President of the UK Scout Association and the Chief Scout Mr George Purdy. William who has also just been awarded his Queen’s Scout Badge led the colour party on this the most important day in the scouting party.

Five Cookstown High School pupils recently enjoyed themselves at a five-day residential with the army. All the pupils excelled themselves and where highly commended by the army training staff. A. Lennox and was awarded ‘Best Male Performance’ and J. Cahoon was awarded the ‘Best Personal Training Score’.

Four Year 13 students recently attended a Cambridge University ‘Taster Event’. Tutors from Corpus Christi College were on hand to speak informally to students about course choices and then to simulate a lecture/tutorial.

Drug and alcohol awareness programme    [Posted: 15/04/04]
Year 10 pupils in Cookstown High School have now completed a six-week drug and alcohol awareness programme facilitated by Sinead Collins from Cookstown Drug and Alcohol Forum and Eugene O’Goan from TIPSA. The Programme aims to provide young people with the facts about drugs and alcohol and raise awareness of some of the related issues. By providing a safe and relaxed environment, the programme also allows young people an opportunity to explore other areas such as decision making, assertiveness and self esteem.


 

Cadets for Canada    [Posted: 15/04/04]
Congratulations to L/Cpl Scott, who has been chosen to attend a six week course with the Canadian Cadet Force at Argonaut in Canada, and L/Cpl Lyttle who has been place as reserve for a six week course with the Canadian Cadet Force in Whitehorse in Canada. These two cadets from Cookstown Open Detachment who attend the High School in Cookstown are two out of only four cadets from all over N. Ireland who were chosen to attend. They will be accompanying twenty-three other cadets from the United Kingdom. They are photographed here with their Detachment Commander Captain G. Morrison.




 

Sentinus Technology Roadshow   [Posted: 15/04/04]
Last week the Sentinus Technology Roadshow arrived at Cookstown High School. This initiative developed by Sentinus and supported by NIBEP is designed specifically for Yr 10 students to open up the exciting worlds of Science, Engineering and Technology.
The programme involved 10 challenging tasks, with each group of pupils assessed on their design, construction and teamwork. Tasks included using electromagnets, designing and operating a solar powered desk fan, and finally constructing and racing electric powered cars.
The over all winners of the competition were L-A. Black D. McKeown W. Lambe and G. Barnes. The pupils where helped and encouraged by Mrs V Given and Mr P. from Sentinus and Mr J.G. Boardman from the Technology Department of Cookstown high school.

 

Cambridge Essay Competition      [Posted: 15/03/04]
Congratulations to the Head boy Christopher, who has won first prize a prestigious essay writing Competition organised by Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The essay was entitled ‘Technology is the quirk of so arranging the world that it prevents us from experiencing it’. Christopher received £300 and the school also received £200.
