Cookstown High School U14 3-0 Friends U14
posted 26 Feb 2008

This was the team’s first match in the Ferris Cup and they were hoping to retain their title as the best team in Ulster at their age. The match was a repeat of last year’s Bannister Bowl final and the boys knew that if they won this match they would have a very good chance of winning the Ferris Cup this year.

The boys got off to a good start with Millar, Crawford and Vartabedian working hard up front.  Early on, Cookstown broke the deadlock through a reverse stick from Sloan after a short corner. Friends were finding it hard to deal with Cookstown’s right side with McCammon making darting runs through Friend’s midfield. Cookstown then got a second after Millar latched onto a defence splitting 50 yard pass from Sloan and he finished superbly from a tight angle.

In the second half Cookstown remained the superior side with Elliott, McAllen and McCammon all putting in brilliant displays. Midway through the second half Cookstown got their third after a brilliant move involving McCammon, Rollins, Vartabedian and Crawford. The move was finished off by Millar at the back post. Cookstown could have increased the score line only for some good goalkeeping from the Friends keeper. Another top performer in this game was Walker who on his first real test in goals kept a clean sheet, pulling off a number of good saves to keep Friends at bay. This was a great team performance and the boys would like to thank Ewan Butler for umpiring and Mr. Haycock for coaching.

Team: Walker, McCammon, Harkness, Vartabedian, McAllen, Elliott, Sloan (capt), Crawford, Robinson, Cheevers, Rollins, Millar, Montgomery, Wilkinson.
