MINI ENTERPRISE

Year 13 Business Studies students set up and manage a Mini Company every year under the direction of the Business Studies teachers and after all expenses are accounted for, profits are donated to a charity of their choice.

Shares are sold to staff and pupils at the start of the school year to raise the necessary finance required to purchase stock etc. We have an account in the First Trust Bank which allows students to write cheques and manage finance.

Students are expected to apply for positions within the company and after a job interview; a team or Board of Directors is appointed to take charge of the running of the business. They are then responsible for everything that takes place within that company; deciding and ordering stock; paying for and selling stock; keeping records; all under the watchful eye of the Business Studies teachers.

Many charities have benefited over the years from these companies but students have also had an opportunity to experience what is involved in running a real business, dealing with real business people such as banks and suppliers as well as gaining important skills required by today’s employers such as leadership, teamwork and communication skills which could never be experienced in a classroom situation.

This year’s mini enterprise was set up in September 2005. A team of 13 pupils were appointed to be Board of Directors. The name ‘GLOW’ was chosen as the name of the company and the logo above was designed to represent the company. It was decided to use the word ‘Glow’ as the theme of the company so products were chosen which glowed in some way.
